Kefalonia, Greece: Argostoli Bridge
Argostoli is at the end of a large bay, with the same name. In order to link the town to the mainland by a shorter route, a 650 metre long causeway was built by the British Army in 1813. This was originally built of wood and took just 2 weeks to construct. It is named the De Bosset Causeway after the chap in charge of the work. In 1842, it was rebuilt in stone and is a monument to the British rule of Kefalonia from 1809 to 1864. The causeway is closed to traffic. MORE... |
