Poros, Harbour and Bay
Poros is the next small town up the coast from Skala. Our guide book described it as "bustling". Bustling?
There was no one there to bustle. There were plenty of tavernas along the front (all more or less empty) so maybe this place does fill up in the summer, but even so bustling?
Poros has 3 main beaches all pebbly, most deserted. The sea is clear, turquoise, as everywhere on Kefalonia. There are plenty of places to eat and drink and a few mini markets, but it is felt less touristy and more like a working Greek town than Skala. Maybe this is because of the port. We saw large ferry boats go in and out to the neighbouring islands and other ports on the island.
Tip: just when you think the road has run out (going North), follow the signs to the "Cactus Bar" for a quiet strip of road with little tavernas right on the beach and fabulous views of the bay. The perfect place for a cold beer. (Toilets 9/10, I think. And I'm a strict marker.)
If you fancy a trip inland, try heading west from Poros through the Straits of Poros the road is great and the views are fantastic enormous mountains and small villages, quiet roads but you may not get out of 3rd gear for long. We are talking interesting gradients, here.
