Scala shore view
We stayed in Skala - one of the main holiday resorts on Kefalonia and, to be honest, we were concerned that we'd find fish 'n chips, discos, "British" pubs and burger bars. We needn't have worried. True, it isn't a quiet, quaint, little fishing village. But it is still Greece, albeit a version which caters for the tourists.

Skala beach is expansive most of it flat and sandy, with caves and rocky outcrops to the south (this photo is taken at the north). Although we were there in the May school holidays, the beach was largely empty. The rows of parasols suggested that this may not be the case in summer. Water sports were available and boat trips to the neighbouring islands of Zante and Ithaka.

The waterfront was delightfully underdeveloped many plots were just waiting for a 5 star hotel to be built on them. We were very glad no one had thought of it!

Skala has a good smattering of mini markets, rental shops, bars and restaurants, most offering a very similar menu of moussaka, souvlaki etc. Unfortunately, these were served "British-style" alongside mashed potatoes, broccoli and carrots. Ah well.

All in all, Skala suited our purpose very well; a lovely beach, a good variety of places to eat out, a pleasant town to wander around in the evening, a few places to buy provisions, rent cars and organise boat trips and not too many people to share it with.
