Argostoli is the capital of Kefalonia and its main port. It is not particularly pretty. Most of the most museums, churches and shops are along the waterfront at Lithostrotu and Plateia Vallinaou.

Argostoli is at the end of a large bay, with the same name. In order to link the town to the mainland by a shorter route, a 650 metre long causeway was built by the British Army in 1813. This was originally built of wood and took just 2 weeks to construct. It is named the De Bosset Causeway after the chap in charge of the work. In 1842, it was rebuilt in stone and is a monument to the British rule of Kefalonia from 1809 to 1864. The causeway is closed to traffic.
